On the Positives of Being Selfish
The word ‘selfish’ has a bad reputation. It’s thrown around with other words like ‘inconsiderate’ and ‘self-centered’ without a second thought.
‘Selfish’ is a misunderstood word. Especially when it comes to priorities and time.
For example, being ‘selfish’ about your family is an incredibly positive use of your personal time. You should never feel bad about missing out on a big work event if your loved one is in trouble or is celebrating a major accomplishment. Money is numerous, but you only have one mother.
You can also be ‘selfish’ about your own joy. Your friends won’t kill you if you start missing more nights out because you’re working towards your goals. If they are, chances are they’re ‘selfish’ about other priorities than you are. That’s totally fine.
The next time you hear that someone is ‘selfish’. Take a step back and really think about what they’re doing. Chances are they’re not inconsiderate or self-centered. They just have other priorities.
