On Existing and Experimenting

Here’s a fun experiment you can try tomorrow.

  1. Tonight, schedule out your entire next day in 30-minute increments.

  2. Be sure to include free time and prep time for meetings.

  3. Set all of your clothes out and put exactly what you’re going to eat in your time blocks.

  4. Put “Meditate/Walk” as your first 30-minute task for the day.

These first four steps are meant to free your mind from any decision making the following day. You’re setting the stage for being completely present.

  1. Wake up and meditate or walk for 30 minutes.

  2. If any thoughts about what you’re doing the rest of the day enter your head, acknowledge them and let them go.

  3. Actively focus on your breath or the nature/buildings around you.

These three steps are all around priming your mind for being present. Your entire day is planned out including planning sessions. You should have nothing to worry about but what’s in front of you.

  1. Start tackling the rest of your time blocks for the day.

  2. Try not to look at the other time blocks that are not the one coming up next on your schedule.

  3. If you need more time for a time block, take that time and stay present in that task.

  4. Respect your free time blocks and do stuff you actually enjoy rather than worrying about the next meeting block.

At the end of your day, write down how you felt after completing that final work time block. Was your day longer than usual? Did you feel more fulfilled? Did you accomplish more because you could actually focus?
