On Peeling Back One More Layer

Have you ever tried putting your phone down in an Uber and talking to the driver on your way to the airport? How about asking your cashier what they enjoy doing in their spare time after their shift?

Think of these questions as the shovel that helps you break through the surface level of a human being. The initial seeds that may lead to a very fruitful experience. The proverbial peeling back of the human onion.

These questions matter and they don’t get asked enough.

Every human has a story and chances are they have not spent their whole lives doing that one occupation. Some Uber drivers are retired CEOs, artists, loving mothers/fathers and everything in between. Most importantly, they’re a vital part of your community.

If you’re trying to get more connected or meet new people, these questions are your foot in the door.

Start asking your fellow community members where they like to go eat and you’ll find some cool new scenes. Inquire on what your cashier does and you’ll find new hikes or bike trails in the area.

Even if it’s the smallest thread, every human has a tie to each other. Questions reveal what that tie is.
