On Pie and Politics

Pie is a very unique dish. It can be a main course or dessert. It can be a symbol of national pride or just a small family tradition. The layering of dough can be intricate or very simple. The filling can be made of many things or few.

Just like us, every pie is different even though we’re all made of the same base ingredients.

Somewhere along the lines, however, it became difficult to keep up with all of the flavors of pie. On top of that, a few flavors started to become crowd favorites. We’ll just call them apple and blueberry pie.

Everybody wants a piece of apple and blueberry. If you grew up as a cherry, blackberry or whateverberry pie and you want to find yourself at the top of the ladder, you have to become a blueberry or apple. You adopt the flavor and makeup of the popular pie. You lose what made your own flavor of pie unique. You have to accept that blueberry pie lovers probably won’t like you as much anymore.

Being a different pie is tough. When you’re trying to make everyone happy, you eventually lose sight of the fact that, in the end, every pie is just made up of flour and a few other ingredients. Hell, some people give up on pie altogether when too many people conform to just a few flavors.

Don’t lose track of what makes your pie special.
