On Watching the Experts

Have you ever seen an expert immersed in their craft? The way Gordon Ramsey’s hands effortlessly float across a cutting board? How natural Chris Paul’s mid range shot looks on a basketball court?

There’s a beauty that comes with ten of thousands of hours honing your craft. Once you start watching humans across all different disciplines you’ll begin to recognize that all experts aren’t really that different from one another.

They have a meticulous way of practicing that almost seems monotonous in the way it’s performed. They embrace nuance and find immense satisfaction in doing the tough tasks every day that no one else wants to do.

Experts will shoot that same free throw three hundred extra times in a day. They’ll stay on the cooking line and cut every chicken by hand. They’ll put in the work knowing that years from now it’ll pay off.

The next time you find yourself on YouTube or Instagram go over to Gordon Ramsey’s page or Kobe Bryant’s page (any expert really) and watch the way they practice. They’re the best because they do the hard things just as well as the easy things.
