Become Your Own Mental Health Coach

Behind every top salesperson, professional athlete and every profession in between there’s usually a great coach holding them accountable.

The same goes for regular human beings experiencing deep joy and meaning in their lives, too. There’s usually a therapist, mentor or family member that’s held them accountable to constantly assessing their well-being.

At the end of the day, ACCOUNTABILITY is really where you get your money’s worth by hiring a professional.

So, what are the key things you need to do in order to become your own mental health coach:

1. Write Up a Training Plan

Professional athletes have every hour of their day meticulously planned out to ensure they reach peak playing performance. They use a strength and conditioning coach to achieve those goals (along with many other coaches) by writing out a detailed plan.

You need to do the same if you want to be your own mental health coach. Spend every night planning out breaks in your next day to do an activity that brings you joy and to make sure you don’t get surprised by important meanings.

You’ll go to sleep feeling much more at ease and not get caught in an anxiety loop when you don’t know what to do.

2. Debrief on What Went Right and What Went Wrong

In other words, watch some game tape after you play.

When your day is over, run through the things that brought you joy vs. what made you anxious. Pick out the places where you could have done something better or improved on a sales call.

Great athletes don’t get better just through experience, but also by learning from that experience.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

A different perspective is sometimes worth its weight in gold.

It’s why sales professionals constantly talk with other peers in their line of work (or a different line of work). It’s not enough to perform in a vacuum.

To be the best coach of your mental health that you can be, you need to seek outside ideas.
